Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Medicine microscope facility director Scot Kuo, PhD, received $1.2M from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, MD, a pediatrician, launched the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative in 2015 with the mission to cure, prevent or manage all diseases by the end of the century. The organization recently awarded $17 million to 17 scientists, including Dr. Kuo, in the U.S.

Dr. Kuo will receive $1.2 million of the award over the next five years. As director of Johns Hopkins Medicine's microscope facility, Dr. Kuo will apply the funds toward new research and inventions that will enhance the field of microscopy and its progress toward improving human medicine. His current work includes developing algorithms to map out the process of how light bends tissues, so he can apply it to sharpen biological images.

With more than 20 years of health IT experience, Dr. Kuo also serves as director of imaging at Johns Hopkins Medicine's Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences and as an associate professor of biomedical engineering and cell biology at the university.
