Cerner shakes up C-suite & 14 other health IT notes

Here's the latest roundup of stories about health IT companies, including Allscripts, Cerner and Microsoft. 

1. Google Cloud on Feb. 18 announced it acquired Cornerstone Technology, an IT company that will help migrate customers' mainframe workloads to the tech giant's cloud platform.

2. Maven, a digital health startup providing access to virtual fertility, pregnancy and postpartum services, announced on Feb. 19 the close of a $45 million Series C round that included participation from 23andMe CEO Anne Wojcicki.

3. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced Feb. 12 its new partnerships with Verizon, Microsoft and Medvis to support the agency's efforts to deploy its first 5G-enabled clinical care system at the VA Palo Alto (Calif.) Health Care System.

4. Microsoft registered a 14 percent increase in revenue — totaling $36.9 billion — in its fiscal year 2020 financial report for the second quarter, which ended Dec. 31, 2019.

5. Royal Free Hospital in London identified a technical error associated with updates to its Cerner-based system as the cause of a six-month delay to thousands of patient letters being sent out.

6. Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Healthcare announced Feb. 18 a multiyear extension of its Cerner agreement.

7. Four patients of different Montana hospitals filed a lawsuit this month alleging medical records company Ciox Health overcharged them for copies of their records.

8. The jobs of a "small number" of employees in Google's cloud computing business have been eliminated as the segment undergoes an internal reorganization.

9. Following in the footsteps of other social media platforms such as Facebook and Pinterest that have begun to take more responsibility for users' mental health, Snapchat introduced a feature on Feb. 11 that will provide in-app support to users who search for flagged topics.

10. To compete in the cloud business with Amazon and Microsoft, Google Cloud's CEO said the company is taking a new approach by separating services by industries and targeting the C-suite directly.

11. Cerner on Feb. 18 named two new C-suite executives, effective immediately: Don Trigg as president and John Peterzalek as chief client and services officer.

12. IBM Watson Health has developed a new cloud-based technology aimed at helping researchers design clinical trials more efficiently, the healthcare technology company announced Feb. 18.

13. Todd Rothenhaus, MD, formerly a senior vice president and CMO of Athenahealth, has joined the board of directors for Current Health, an artificial intelligence-powered remote patient management platform.

14. Meditech announced Feb. 18 the release of Expanse Patient Care, a web-based software that allows nurses and therapists to complete administrative tasks via a mobile device.

15. Allscripts is partnering with India-based health IT company Manorama Infosolutions to develop an integrated healthcare management information system and health information exchange platform, according to a Feb. 18 news release.
