Cerner purchases Kansas City manufacturing plant

The Paris-based pharmaceutical company Sanofi closed and sold its manufacturing facility in Kansas City, Kan., to Cerner, reports the Kansas City Business Journal.

The estimated $12.5 million deal for the 692,000-square-foot facility closed Nov. 21.

In 2009, Sanofi originally announced the facility would close due to a "strong decline in demand." At that time, approximately 370 employees worked at the facility.

"Since Sanofi first announced the Kansas City site closure in August 2009, we have gradually reduced manufacturing levels as well as the number of employees," Sanofi spokeswoman Anna Robinson wrote in an email to the Kansas City Business Journal.

This isn't the first time Cerner has done business with Sanofi. In 2007, the Kansas City-based health IT vendor leased three of Sanofi's facilities for its existing south Kansas City campus, which was recently renamed the Realization Campus.

"Through our success we continue to grow, and the Sanofi property was advantageous in terms of proximity, space and value," Cerner spokeswoman Victoria Rosengarten wrote in an email to the Kansas City Business Journal. "The acquired buildings will become part of the Realization Campus and renovated for training rooms and office space."

Cerner is currently building its seventh campus, dubbed the Innovations Campus, in Kansas City.
