Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is now a founding sponsor of Bioscience Los Angeles County, a nonprofit organization that supports life sciences innovation among research hospitals, academic institutions and public institutions in the region.
The organization, also referred to as BioLA, was formed last year in support of life sciences startups and research.
Los Angeles-based Cedars-Sinai currently leads 593 active clinical trials and 1,845 research projects. Its collaboration with BioLA will help expand the company's scientific expertise and foster a "patient-first culture," BioLA CEO Daniel Tellalian said in a news release.
In 2018, more than 90,000 people were employed in LA County's life sciences industry, which generated an estimated $42.5 billion for the economy, according to the report. Additionally, the National Institutes of Health awarded $1.1 billion to institutions and companies in the region during fiscal year 2018.
"While Los Angeles County has always been a bioscience powerhouse from a research perspective, we are now flexing our entrepreneurial muscle," LA County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas said. "Cedars-Sinai's commitment is a significant statement of the role BioLA will play in moving this industry to the next level."
