Noom's virtual diabetes prevention program will become a reimbursable Medicare benefit in 2018.

Noom, a mHealth company, says it is the first virtual provider recognized by the CDC's National Diabetes Prevention Program. For the DPP, the CDC reviews behavioral and lifestyle programs that tackle prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. The prevention and management programs that meet CDC criteria are recognized as a covered medical benefit under Medicare.

Noom's diabetes prevention program, which has more than 45 million clients, is a mobile solution that focuses on behavioral coaching. A study in BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care recently concluded 64 percent of those who complete Noom's program lost more than 5 percent of their body weight.
