Big tech reaches $5T value: 5 things to know

Alphabet is the fourth company to top a $1 trillion market value, joining Apple, Microsoft and Amazon, according to CNBC. With that value and including Facebook, the five big tech companies have a $5.2 trillion value.

Here are five things to know:

1. Coming with the high valuation is regulators looking to break the five big tech companies up. The Department of Justice, Federal Trade Commission and state law enforcement are investigating these companies for anti-competitive practices.

2. Alphabet has made major strides in recent months to become more of a competitor with Apple, Microsoft and Amazon. The company is investing in its cloud infrastructure, which is generating more than $8 billion in annual revenue, reports CNBC.

3. To compete with Apple, in November, Google acquired Fitbit for $2.1 billion.

4. The $5.2 trillion valuation is an 11 percent increase from what the five companies were valued at five years ago.

5. After announcing Alphabet's $1 trillion market value, the company's stock began to rise. Over the past year, Alphabet's stock has increased 33 percent. Apple has seen the most growth, with its stock spiking 103 percent; Microsoft and Facebook's stock are both up 50 percent year over year.
