Mike Peluso is a career-long revenue cycle professional and has held senior leadership roles with multiple revenue cycle technology companies. He currently serves as the Chief Technology Officer for Rectangle Health. Here he answers three questions about leadership and health IT.

Question: What is the No. 1 principle you uphold and practice to effectively lead a team?
Michael Peluso: I'm the opposite of a micro-manager, I don't necessarily care how you get a project done. My only requirement is that it gets done. The only other communication I require is if there's a situation preventing you from getting something done, I expect the issue brought to me right away so I can help solve the problem.
Q: What does healthcare need more of? Less of?
MP: Healthcare needs more functions to engage their customers, or patients. Healthcare is the one experience where payment is disconnected from the exchange process. Uber — you hit a button on your phone, a car shows up, drops you off, and you've already paid for that experience by the time it is over. Amazon — you click a button, you've paid and the next thing you know a box shows up at your door. The list goes on, but this type of efficiency doesn't exist in today's healthcare landscape.
Part of this "problem" or void is caused by our industry's unique reliance on a 3rd party-insurance to pay for services that have already been rendered. Administrative staff and healthcare businesses at large would benefit from less of this uncertainty in what they're required to collect from the patient's wallet.
Q: What is one topic or issue you've been investing time in to better understand as of late?
MP: Blockchain technology and more specifically its application to healthcare. The potential for a decentralized system where patients would own and control their own medical data could have major disruption implications for our industry.
