Banner launches innovation group

Emily Rappleye -

Phoenix-based Banner Health merged its innovation and digital business leadership teams and their incubators to create the Banner Innovation Group, a division that will focus on developing and commercializing ideas that improve the patient experience, according to AZ Big Media.

BIG will organize innovation projects already underway at Banner, while enabling its colleagues to develop and test new innovations that help lower the cost of care, improve quality and create a better consumer experience. The division will be led by Banner's chief strategy and growth officer, Scott Nordlund.

"We also want to be able to effectively work with venture companies, partner with strategic companies that we already work with in a deeper way, and collaborate in innovation hubs — I think our new structure will create a more streamlined approach to that," Mr. Nordlund told AZ Big Media.

The first large area of focus will be improving the emergency care experience, Mr. Nordlund told AZ Big Media. One idea already underway is an app with urgent care locations, wait times and a 24-hour nurse line. Banner has also implemented teleconsults in emergency rooms to accelerate triage, according to the report.
