Apple to open $1B campus in Austin: 4 things to know

Jessica Kim Cohen -

Apple is building a new 133-acre campus in Austin, Texas.

Here are four things to know about the expansion:

1. The campus, located less than a mile from Apple's existing facilities in Austin, is a $1 billion investment. Apple expects the expansion will make the company the largest private employer in Austin.

"Apple is proud to bring new investment, jobs and opportunity to cities across the United States and to significantly deepen our quarter-century partnership with the city and people of Austin," Apple CEO Tim Cook said. "Talent, creativity and tomorrow’s breakthrough ideas aren't limited by region or zip code, and, with this new expansion, we're redoubling our commitment to cultivating the high-tech sector and workforce nationwide."

2. The campus will initially accomodate 5,000 employees, with the capacity to expand to 15,000. New jobs at the campus will include engineering, research and development, operations, finance, sales, and customer support positions.

3. Apple already employs 6,200 people in Austin, meaning the city comprises the largest population of Apple employees outside of Cupertino, Calif., where it is headquartered.

4. Apple also plans to establish new sites in Seattle, San Diego and Culver City, Calif., during the next three years.
