Apple hopes to encourage organ donation with new app

Staff -

Apple, which forged ties to healthcare with its motivation behind the Apple Watch, will be strengthening those ties in the coming months as the company promotes organ donation among iPhone users, according to The Associated Press.

The option to register as an organ donor will be available beginning this fall through the iPhone's Health app. Apple is working with Donate Life America, a nonprofit organization, to facilitate the option, which will be one of the new facets of Apple's iOS 10 operating system. Through the app, registered iPhone users can add their organ donor information to their iPhone's "emergency information" display.

Apple CEO Tim Cook attributed the idea for the app to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs' "excruciating" wait for a new liver while he battled cancer, according to the report.
