Apple CEO Tim Cook highlights 3rd-party physician app VisualDX in earnings call

Apple CEO Tim Cook discussed a physician-facing app during a recent company earnings call, Business Insider reports.

The app, VisualDx, aims to help physicians diagnose skin conditions. It leverages Core ML, a machine learning framework developed by Apple, to compare photos taken with an iPhone's camera against its database of 32,000 medical images.

"VisualDx is … pioneering new health diagnostics with Core ML, automating skin image analysis to assist dermatologists with their diagnoses," Mr. Cook said during the earnings call.

In an interview with Business Insider, Art Papier, MD, CEO of VisualDx, emphasized the app is meant to be used as a type of clinical decision support, not a true diagnosis tool. "It's really education and triage. It's not diagnosis, we don't believe in that," he said.

VisualDx is available on Apple's App Store. Its various in-app purchases range from $99 for one year's access to $499 per year for a complete purchase of the decision support tool and supporting medical information, according to Business Insider.
