Amendments to Electronic Communications Privacy Act Address Privacy in Cloud Computing

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), chairman of the Judiciary Committee, has introduced the Electronic Communications Privacy Act Amendments Act of 2011 to address privacy concerns in cloud computing, according to a report by the Healthcare Information & Management Systems Society.

The original 1986 law allows law enforcement and others easier access to data in cloud systems compared to data on an individual hard drive or in a filing cabinet. The amendment could affect healthcare providers as more hospitals and health systems consider cloud computing for storing data.
