Amazon Web Services outage hits thousands: 7 things to know

Amazon Web Services experienced an hours-long outage Dec. 7 that has disrupted websites and services for thousands of users, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Seven things to know:

1. Users began reporting issues with AWS around 10:45 a.m. EST, according to website outages tracker Downdetector. Nearly 11,300 outages were reported across New York, Washington and Chicago, the Journal reported.

2. In an online notice on its status page, AWS said it was experiencing issues with certain application programming interfaces and the AWS Management Console. The problems affected AWS' main U.S.-East-1 region, which is hosted in northern Virginia.

3. AWS last updated information on the outage around 12:35 p.m. PST, disclosing that the root cause of the outage is an "impairment of several network devices," and the company is still working to resolve the issue. It added that it has started recovering in certain areas, but it does not have an estimated projection for when the issue will be fully resolved.

4. Services reporting issues as a result of the outage include Disney+, Netflix, Slack, Robinhood and Coinbase, according to CNBC

5. Amazon warehouse and delivery workers also reported disruptions due to the outage, and Amazon sellers said they were unable to access the company's internal website, Seller Central, to manage customer orders.

6. Amazon did not respond to CNBC's questions about the outage's effect on retail operations or how many warehouses and delivery stations were experiencing issues.

7. Amazon is the largest cloud-computing provider in the U.S., according to the Journal. In July, AWS launched its healthcare offering, which provides cloud-based services for 16 healthcare areas, including genomics and patient-facing care. In November, AWS teamed up with University of California San Diego Health to establish a cloud innovation center.
