Amazon is building a health, wellness team around Alexa

Julie Spitzer -

Amazon built a team within its Alexa division to explore ways of making the AI-powered voice assistant more useful in healthcare, according to CNBC.

According to internal documents reviewed by CNBC, more than a dozen people — led by five-year Amazon veteran Rachel Jiang  — are studying healthcare applications of Alexa, such as disease management, care for mothers and infants, and aging.

Dubbed "health & wellness," the team is within Alexa Domains, a subgroup of the Alexa unit.

Amazon declined to comment on CNBC's article, but it has been working with a number of healthcare organizations to develop Alexa skills. For example, in the Summer of 2017, it worked with pharmaceutical manufacturer Merck to help people manage their diabetes care.
