The American Medical Association has selected three entrepreneurial organizations as winners of its Healthier Nation Innovation Challenge, and Twiage took home the first place prize.

The challenge began in April, when the AMA invited U.S. healthcare entrepreneurs, physicians and medical students to present their best ideas for shaping and improving healthcare in the 21st century.

Of the 116 submissions, the AMA selected three winners, each of whom will receive money and access to the AMA's network of organizations that specialize in startup strategy.

Here are the 2016 winners of the AMA's Healthier Nation Innovation Challenge.

1. First place and $25,000 prize: Twiage. Led by YiDing Yu, MD, Twiage is an interoperable platform that allows first responders and ambulances to share real-time data with hospitals.

2. Second place and $15,000 prize: Light Line Catheter. Led by Mitchell Barneck, a third year medical student, Light Line is a catheter that utilizes light phototherapy technology to disinfect the device while it's in a patient's body.

3. Third place and $10,000 prize: Ceeable. Led by Cynthia Matossian, MD, Ceeable is a mobile health technology that assists with the detection and diagnosis of eye disease such as age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma.
