AHIMA, HIMSS, IHE publish map to interoperability standards

Staff -

Three health IT groups have partnered to release a thorough map of health information management practices for standards developers and outline a methodology for using standards to align those practices with current technological capabilities.

The whitepaper, published by AHIMA, HIMSS and Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise International, is 56 pages long and serves as a guide for professionals in health IT and information management to take steps to ensure semantic, functional and technical interoperability among systems, according to HIMSS.

"This collaborative effort with our three organizations — HIMSS, IHE International and AHIMA — allowed us to share valuable knowledge on standards development and health information exchange as we developed this white paper," Mari Greenberger, director of informatics for HIMSS North America, said in a statement. "Building on our current efforts in defining and developing use cases for secure exchange of health data, HIMSS recognizes the importance of and need for this ongoing alignment to provide information that is useful and drive meaningful outcomes to the healthcare community."
