Of all of the evolving roles among hospital leadership, CIOs may have the most new responsibility to take on as revenue cycle management and quality care outcomes, among other factors, are increasingly tied to IT.

A third of CIO respondents to a recent survey on current organizational priorities said this shift is embodied in the "digital disruption" occurring right now. Another 28 percent of respondents said they expect this disruption to come within 1 to 2 years.

Here are 6 other things to know from the Harvey Nash survey.

  • 34 percent of CIO respondents said they are focused on IT projects that save money, as opposed to 66 percent who are focused on projects that will make money.
  • 59 percent of CIO respondents said they face a shortage of technology skills among potential staff.
  • 17 percent of respondents' organizations had a chief digital officer, up 10 percent from last year's survey.
  • 80 percent of CIO respondents said their job is challenging, but they are fulfilled doing it every day.
  • 62 percent of respondents did not see their salaries rise in 2015.
  • 48 percent of respondents said they expect to change positions within the next two years.
