A 'perfect storm' is fueling health tech M&A: 9 largest health IT acquisitions of 2017

Converging digital technologies and societal changes, coupled with tech giants' entrance into the healthcare space, is creating the "perfect storm" for innovation and mergers and acquisitions in health tech, according to a Hampleton Partners report.


The international research firm reviewed M&A activity during the second half of 2017 that affected healthcare technology companies. The U.S. market dominated, reeling in 77 out of the 100 announced deals.

The firm found a surge in deals during the last half of 2017 disclosed amounts of nearly $9.5 billion, which is four times higher than the first half of 2017 and up 140 percent year-over-year.

Here are the nine largest mergers and acquisitions in health IT that were disclosed in 2017.

1. Express Scripts acquires eviCore Healthcare: $3.6 billion

2. Internet Brands acquires WebMD: $2.8 billion

3. Optum acquires The Advisory Board: $1.3 billion

4. McKesson acquires CoverMyMeds: $1.1 billion

5. PRA Health Sciences acquires Symphony Health: $533 million

6. Teladoc acquires Best Doctors: $440 million

7. Mantagu acquires Servelec Group: $296 million

8. Telus Internationals acquires Kroll Computer Systems: $250 million

9. Fidelity Nation Financial acquires T-System: $200 million
