8 things to know before HIMSS18

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society's annual conference will take place March 5-9 in Las Vegas.

Here are eight things to know before HIMSS18.

1. An estimated 45,000-plus professionals are slated to take part in the 2018 HIMSS Conference & Exhibition.

2. The conference will include 300-plus education sessions, as well as hundreds of special programs and networking opportunities, according to the conference website.

3. HIMSS18 education topics include clinical informatics and clinician engagement; connected health and telehealth; consumer and patient engagement; EHRs and various others.

4. More than 1,300 health information and technology vendors are projected to be on the HIMSS18 exhibit floor.

5. Other exhibit floor features include a cybersecurity command center and a federal health IT solutions pavilion.

6. Eric Schmidt, technical advisor and former executive chairman of Alphabet, Google's parent company, will deliver the opening keynote at 5 p.m. Pacific Time March 5. Other keynote speakers are David Shulkin, MD, secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs; Vice Admiral Raquel C. Bono, director of the Defense Health Agency, Defense Health Headquarters; Keller Rinaudo, founder and CEO of Zipline; and Earvin "Magic" Johnson Jr., role model, sports legend and successful entrepreneur.

7. HIMSS18 will also feature the 8th annual Revenue Cycle & Solutions Summit 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 5. According to the conference website, the summit will focus on "creating a patient-centered revenue cycle to increase payments, reduce collections and boost customer loyalty." Tickets are required for attendees.

8. The HIMSS Award Gala is scheduled for 6:30 to 9 p.m. PST March 8. Awards given out include the ACCE-HIMSS Excellence in Clinical Engineering and Information Technology Synergies Award, the CHIME-HIMSS John E. Gall, Jr. CIO of the Year Award, the HIMSS-AMDIS Physician Executive Leader of the Year Award and the HIMSS-ANI Nursing Informatics Leadership Award. Tickets are required to attend.
