7 of healthcare's most promising AI companies from Forbes' 2020 list

Drug discovery startup Atomwise and stroke risk predictor Viz.ai are among a group of seven healthcare companies recognized by Forbes for their artificial intelligence capabilities.

For its second annual AI 50: America's Most Promising Artificial Intelligence Companies 2020 list, Forbes partnered with venture firms Sequoia Capital and Meritech Capital to analyze private AI companies in the U.S.

Forbes received about 400 applications, which companies used to provide details on their technology, business model, customers and financials. Sequoia Capital and Meritech Capital then used an algorithm to pinpoint the 100 with the highest quantitative scores and a panel of eight AI judges chose the 50 "most compelling" companies, according to the report.

Below are seven from the healthcare industry:

1. Atomwise. The company uses an AI-based statistical approach to identify drugs that are good candidates for potential treatments.

2. Biofourmis. The startup monitors patients' health using wearable devices that provide physiology data and analytics for hospital partners to make more informed care decisions.

3. Genesis Therapeutics. The company uses neural networks and biophysical simulation to develop new drugs.

4. Karius. The company offers a blood test based on next-generation sequencing of microbial cell-free DNA to identify more than 1,000 pathogens including DNA viruses and bacteria.

5. Recursion. The company uses automation, machine learning and biological image data to discover potential drugs to treat rare diseases.

6. twoXAR. The company's computational platform pinpoints potential drug candidates and then validates and de-risks them through preclinical studies.

7. Viz.ai. The company provides AI-powered software that can detect and alert stroke teams of large vessel occlusion strokes within minutes of completing a CT scan.
