6 Priorities for CIOs While Leading Health IT Transformations

A new report called "Health System Chief Information Officers: Juggling Responsibilities, Managing Expectations, Building the Future," by Deloitte's Center for Health Solutions outlines some of the short- and long-term priorities for chief information officers as they prepare their organizations to make the transition to an information-driven health system, according to a Deloitte press release.

Consultants at the Center for Health Solutions interviewed CIOs in 12 major healthcare systems for this report.

Some of the short-term priorities for CIOs, according to the report, are:

•    Navigating the regulatory environment
•    Completing foundational ground work
•    Moving toward accountable care and payment reform

Some of the long-term priorities for CIOs, according to the report, are:

•    Creating an information-driven health system using advanced analytics
•    Building an information technology platform for expanded scope of services
•    Building a platform for risk-based contracts with payors

CIOs will rely on the following five factors to ensure the success and effectiveness of their organizations' health IT-led transformation:

•    Adequate financial resources
•    Technology supplier sustainability
•    Organization oversight and support
•    Qualified IT professionals
•    Scalability
