50k records stolen from pharmaceutical company Akorn offered to highest bidder

Staff -

Akorn, a pharmaceutical company based in Lake Forest, Ill., suffered a data breach that compromised its customer database of more than 50,000 patient records, according to a CSO report.

The breach has been traced back to a hacker operating under the alias "Mufasa." The same hacker claimed responsibility for a recent breach of iiNET, Australia's second largest ISP, according to the report.

The hacker posted basic data about the stolen records on a web forum, offering to sell them to the highest bidder or back to the company, whichever comes first. The compromised records include Drug Enforcement Agency registration numbers, which are assigned to healthcare providers and used to track controlled substances, according to the report.

Akorn confirmed the breach and is in the process of notifying customers. The company is cooperating with law enforcement officials, including the DEA, according to the report.
