5 actions top-performing tech leaders implement

Top performing technology leaders are managing and retaining their talent more effectively, are more involved in whole-company leadership and are more actively chasing transformation, according to a March 24 McKinsey report

The report surveyed 315 business and technology leaders in April on how they are leading their organizations through digital transformations and what they are prioritizing. Here is what the survey found:

  1. At the top companies, 73 percent of leaders said they are greatly involved in the companywide strategy and agenda and have a role in shaping it.

  2. At non-top-performing companies, only 31 percent of respondents said they were greatly involved in shaping companywide strategy.

  3. Leaders from top-quartile companies are also more actively pursuing technological transformation than their less well-performing peers, focusing more heavily on scaling data and analytics, redesigning tech to feed into business strategy and changing their delivery model.

  4. Top performing leaders also manage and develop IT talent more effectively than others by attracting and training that talent.

  5. Senior tech leadership at top companies is more effective at fostering culture that supports new and digital ways of working.
