4 things to know about 'data science agency' Delta Brain

Jessica Kim Cohen -

Delta Brain, a Pasadena, Calif.-based predictive analytics company, sees itself as more than a vendor — it's a full-service "data science agency" for healthcare businesses.

Here are four things to know about the company:

1. Adam Lichtl, PhD, founded Delta Brain in 2015 to help hospitals and clinics create data-informed operational workflows that improve preventive healthcare. Today, the former Wall Street quantitative analyst and aerospace engineer serves as the company's CEO and chief data scientist. Since its founding, the company has worked with more than 50 multispecialty clinics to forecast patient demand and allocate appropriate resources.

2. Delta Brain works with healthcare organizations as a consulting and engineering service to develop software tools that use machine learning — a type of artificial intelligence — to address various operational challenges at facilities, such as high wait times or inefficient utilization levels. The company's goal is to streamline resource allocation in healthcare, making services more efficient and cost-effective.

3. A recent project that Delta Brain data scientists and business operations experts completed involves an autonomous scheduling engine. The system assigns multispecialty staff onto a monthlong scheduling board, weighing constraints on which team members can work with which services and at what times, alongside rules outlining the minimum and maximum number of shifts for various providers.

4. Delta Brain is backed by Pittsburgh-based UPMC.
