$3M gift leads to creation of IU Simon cancer informatics chair

Indianapolis-based Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center will create a cancer informatics chair position following $3 million gifts from the Regenstrief Institute and the Walther Cancer Institute.

The chair-holder will be a research scientist at Regenstrief and a faculty member at Indiana University. In this position, the chair will work to analyze and incorporate big data into cancer treatment and prevention, according to a Jan. 11 Regenstrief news release.

"We routinely generate enormous data sets, but the information needs to be effectively organized and analyzed to make a real difference," Kelvin Lee, MD, director of the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, said. "With these gifts, we'll be able to recruit an expert who can lead us through the complexities of informatics and position IU as a leader in the developing field of cancer informatics."
