Only 7 percent of security professionals use artificial intelligence within their layered defenses; however, this number is expected to increase within the next three years, according to an Institute for Critical Infrastructure Technology report.
The report, titled How to Crush the Health Sector's Ransomware Pandemic, analyzes the healthcare sector and its adoption of AI-powered algorithmic defense technology.
Here are three ways healthcare organizations can leverage AI for cybersecurity.
1. Healthcare organizations can use AI to identify patterns of behavior on its infrastructure and applications, which can later flag any abnormal usage it detects. While monitoring organizations from this 360-degree view, AI defenses can also automate network cybersecurity operations, should it detect any hacker behaviors.
2. As part of its automated cybersecurity operations, organizations can use machine learning to calculate risk scores for various security incidents. An AI platform can then use this risk score to determine whether to grant users access to certain logins or areas of the organization's infrastructure, based on their behavior.
3. Machine learning can also be leveraged within healthcare to facilitate the implementation of blockchain technology, which can help organizations improve secure data sharing. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has already seen the benefit of this method, joining forces with IBM Watson Health to study the efficacy of health data exchange using blockchain technology.
