CMS reports 209,000 eligible professionals face a 2 percent payment adjustment in Medicare reimbursement in 2016 for failing to demonstrate meaningful use in 2014. Politico calculates approximately two out of five providers eligible for the meaningful use program will see these reimbursement adjustments.
The majority of these eligible professionals will receive a negative payment adjustment of less than $1,000. Approximately 30,400 eligible professionals will receive payment adjustments between $1,000 and $5,000; 56,000 will receive payment adjustments between $5,000 and $10,000; and 5,700 will receive payment adjustments of $10,000 or more.
Fewer eligible professionals face payment adjustments this year compared to last year's 257,000 providers.
CMS did not indicate how many participating hospitals face payment adjustments this year.
However, in 2017, it is possible that almost no eligible providers and hospitals will face reimbursement cuts, as a blanket hardship exemption for all meaningful use participants was passed in late December.
