10 notable CIO moves in 2014

The health IT sector underwent a number of changes in 2014, between meaningful use attestations, ICD-10 implementation delays and the introduction of new technologies. At the same time, IT leaders were making moves.

Here are 10 of the biggest CIO moves from 2014.

1. In May, Gretchen Tegethoff, CIO of Athens (Ga.) Regional Health System, resigned from her role after a troubled rollout of the system's Cerner EHR caused patient safety concerns. Her resignation followed the departure of CEO James Thaw.

2. In August, Dan Drawbaugh, vice president and CIO of Pittsburgh-based UPMC, resigned to pursue other professional interests. His resignation came shortly after Chief Innovation Officer and President of the UPMC Technology Development Center Rebecca Kaul left UPMC after three months in the role.

UPMC named Rasu Shrestha, MD, chief innovation officer and interim president of UPMC TDC. Ed McCallister, formerly senior vice president of enterprise applications and business services for UPMC's information services division, was named interim CIO of the system in Mr. Drawbaugh's absence.

3. Also in August, Todd Park, U.S. chief technology officer, announced plans to resign at the end of the year. Mr. Park served as CTO since 2012. In September, President Obama named Megan Smith as Mr. Park's successor, joining the White House from Google[x] where she was a vice president.   

4. In September, Philip Fasano, executive vice president and CIO of Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente Hospitals and Health Plan, resigned after seven years in the role. He joined the insurance giant AIG as executive vice president and CIO, a newly created role. Kaiser appointed Richard (Dick) Daniels as interim CIO.

5. In March, Tom Langston, senior vice president and CIO of St. Louis-based SSM Health, announced his plans to retire in July. In December, SSM Health named Philip Loftus senior vice president and CIO.

6. Sameer Badlani, MD, stepped down from his position as CMIO of University of Chicago Medicine and the Biological Sciences Division in August to accept the CHIO position at Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Healthcare.

7. In December, Eric Poon, MD, MPH, stepped down from his position as vice president and CMIO at Boston Medical Center to become CHIO of Durham, N.C.-based Duke Medicine.

8. Royal Oak, Mich.-based Beaumont Health named Subra Sripada CIO and chief transformation officer following the system's mega-merger with Botsford Health Care in Farmington Hills, Mich., and Oakwood Healthcare in Dearborn, Mich., in September.

9. Matthew Chambers was named CIO of Dallas-based Baylor Scott & White in April, overseeing IT systems for the largest nonprofit health system in Texas. Mr. Chambers previously was CIO of Scott & White Healthcare in Temple, Texas, before its merger with Baylor Health Care System.

10. Also in April, David Bensema, MD, was named CIO of Louisville, Ky.-based Baptist Health. He was previously serving as CMIO of the health system.
