Friday feel good: Chicago Sky signs La Rabida Children's Hospital patient to one-day contract

A dose of feel good to kick off the weekend.

Seventeen-year-old Taliyah Jackson is getting the chance of a lifetime, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Ms. Jackson loves basketball, but suffers from Ataxia, a condition that impacts her control over her bodily movements. She is frequently treated for Ataxia and seizures at Chicago-based La Rabida Children's Hospital.

At the end of 2014 and into 2015, Ms. Jackson was at La Rabida after seizures caused her to lose the ability to walk. While there, Chicago Bulls player Jimmy Butler visited her room. She also had the opportunity to be featured in the team's Charities video.

The video caught the attention of Dana "Pokey" Chatman, coach and general manager of the Chicago Sky, the WNBA team. "When I learned about Taliyah, I was in awe of her ability to smile through the obstacles she's presented with due to her medical condition," said Ms. Chatman. "She has determination and grit, and that's why we wanted to make her a member of the team for the day."

Ms. Jackson will sign her one-day contract with the Sky before the team plays the Seattle Storm at Rosemount, Ill.-based Allstate Arena on Sept. 2. She'll also be introduced at a news conference prior to the game.

"I was in tears when they called and told us," said Denise Smalley, Ms. Jackson's mother. "It was so nice that they would give my daughter the chance to spend the day with them."

Ms. Jackson was beyond excited. When asked what she was most anticipating, she said, "Meeting the team and playing with them."
