Friday feel good: 92-year-old former nurse gets surprised with hospital tour

Kelly Gooch -

A dose of feel good to kick off the weekend.

This week marked a special homecoming for 92-year-old former nurse Jane Elsea.

Ms. Elsea is a resident at Sunrise Senior Living, which is starting a program to help residents fulfill the thing they most want to do, The Courier reports.

For Ms. Elsea, that was a tour and luncheon at Blanchard Valley Hospital in Findlay, Ohio, where she worked decades earlier. She was interested in learning how the nursing profession has changed over the year, according to the report. She served as a nurse from the 1960s to 1980s, much of it as the hospital's nursing supervisor.

This past Monday, which also happened to fall during National Nurses Week, Ms. Elsea was able to visit her former employer. The Courier reports that she received a VIP tour of the hospital and attended a luncheon, along with her family, with some hospital leaders.

She was made aware of various changes during the tour. For instance, according to the report, she learned that mothers and babies are now given matching bracelets, so when the mother is next to her baby the bracelets make a sound. She also saw how nurses now wear computerized badges around their neck, so they can call one specific person, rather than talking over the intercom. She even met two robots, including a robot in the pharmacy.

Ms. Elsea also learned about the changes to the hospital in the past decades, including that what used to be the emergency room is now used for office space, according to the report

She didn't know about the visit until the morning of her tour. She told The Courier it was "a very happy surprise."
