Wyoming hospital offers 25% discount to patients who pay off bills

Ayla Ellison -

St. John's Medical Center in Jackson, Wyo., gave patients who settled their tab in December a 25 percent discount on their medical bills, according to the Jackson Hole News&Guide.

St. John's Patient Financial Services Manager Christy Liaw said more than 840 people have used the discount to pay off their debts in December. Ms. Liaw said the hospital hopes to help 1,000 people pay off their bills using the discount by the end of the year.

The hospital is offering the deep discount in hopes of reducing its yearly unpaid debt. About $3 million of the $7 million St. John's has budgeted for charity care and uncompensated care in 2016 is earmarked for unpaid debt, according to the report.

The offer, which extends through Dec. 31, cannot be applied to bills for cosmetic procedures.
