A couple of Wisconsin's major health systems posted strong financial results in the most-recent fiscal year, according to the Journal Sentinel.
Milwaukee-based Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare reported operating income of $69.2 million in its fiscal year that ended June 30, up 158 percent from a year earlier. ProHealth Care also saw its operating income more than double. The Waukesha-based system posted operating income of $37.8 million in its fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, up 125 percent from the year prior.
These two systems are among several in Wisconsin that reported a spike in income in the most-recent fiscal year. The systems' financial success is attributable to a number of facotrs, including the expansion of insurance under the Affordable Care Act. As a result, many Wisconsin health systems are providing less charity care and incurring fewer bad debts, according to the report.
In addition to the boost from the ACA, systems' cost control efforts have also contributed to the increase in earnings.
