Where AMA stands on surprise-billing legislation

Kelly Gooch -

As Congress takes its August recess, the American Medical Association is reiterating its stance on surprise-billing legislation.

The association of physicians and medical students called on Congress to pass legislation that will:

  • Ensure patients are protected from massive bills after they unintentionally receive care from an out-of-network provider.
  • Establish fair benchmark rates for payment to out-of-network providers that include actual local charges.
  • Establish a fair and independent process to resolve payment disputes between health plans and out-of-network providers.
  • Require insurers to provide patients with a large pool of physicians to choose from, including hospital-based emergency physicians and on-call surgeons and anesthesiologists.
