Katie Adams -

Western Michigan University received a $550 million donation, the largest private gift ever given to a public university, the Kalamazoo-based university said June 8.

The university's medical school will receive $300 million, which will be used to advance medical education, fund scholarships and support faculty expertise.

The gift comes from a group of anonymous Western Michigan alumni, and they will provide the funds over the next 10 years, according to The Washington Post.
