Kelly Gooch -

Seattle-based Virginia Mason Medical Center is one step closer to establishing its planned learning, innovation and simulation center thanks to a recent $5 million commitment from philanthropist Floyd Jones.

Here are four things to know.

1. The $5 million commitment will help establish the Floyd Jones Learning, Innovation and Simulation Center at Virginia Mason.

2. In a news release, Virginia Mason described the center as "an education hub and incubator where Virginia Mason team members will collaborate with patients and their families in developing and testing processes to continuously improve quality, safety and the patient experience."

3. Hospital officials expect the center to open in 2018, the release states.

4. Mr. Jones has long provided funding to Virginia Mason. For instance, he and his late wife, Delores, helped fund construction for the Floyd and Delores Jones Pavilion at Virginia Mason, according to the release.
