Use certified medical coders to help navigate reimbursement regulation changes, PMI says

Kelly Gooch -

Physicians consistently strive to provide quality patient care and achieve proper reimbursement while complying with regulatory requirements. To help them with this, an increasing number of independent physicians are seeking out certified medical coders, according to San Antonio-based Practice Management Institute, which offers continuing education for healthcare professionals.

PMI is one such company offering coders for hire by physicians.

"The healthcare reimbursement system is very detailed making it very challenging for physicians to keep up, and reliance on technology is a bad idea. Certified medical coders have completed formal training on coding rules, guidelines and working with third-party carriers to get claims paid. You need a highly skilled person able to communicate with the physician and the carriers on claims and fight for reimbursement that is rightfully due to the practice," added PMI CEO David Womack.

PMI, which has a CMS-recognized certified medical coder training program, went on to note the importance of properly coded claims in relation to revenue as well as the ever-changing regulatory requirements that must be followed throughout the claim submission process.

For these and other reasons, Mr. Womack concludes, "the value of hiring certified medical coders is well-worth it."
