Update: UNC Hospitals' CFO signed off on mistaken dark money contribution

Emily Rappleye -

The CFO of Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Hospitals signed off on an invoice that mistakenly greenlighted a contribution to a dark money political group, a hospital spokesperson confirmed to local news station WBTV.

Earlier this year, UNC Hospitals CFO Chris Ellington inadvertently signed off on a $58,633 contribution to Partners for Innovation in Health Care, a political advocacy group, as part of its dues to the North Carolina Healthcare Association, a WBTV investigation found. The group is considered a "dark money" political group because it does not publicly disclose its donors.

The hospital paid the sum in error, a hospital system spokesperson told WBTV, and the investigation alerted the system of the mistake. UNC Hospitals has since been issued a full refund.
