University of Colorado Health May Add Health Insurance Arm

Staff -
Roughly one year after University of Colorado Health was created through the merger of University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora and Poudre Valley Health System in Fort Collins, Colo., UCHealth is now contemplating whether it will launch a health plan, according to a Denver Post report.

If UCHealth created its own branded HMO, it would go up against the likes of Kaiser Permanente, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Colorado and UnitedHealthcare, which are the health insurer giants in the area, according to the report. However, UCHealth is also considering creating an HMO in partnership with Anthem or UnitedHealthcare.

UCHealth officials have said nothing is for certain yet, and there is no timetable to establish anything.

"It's an option," Rulon Stacey, president of UCHealth, told the Denver Post. "If we think it's the right thing to do, we'll do it as fast we can."
