Trinity Health's operating income climbs $79M

Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health posted higher operating income in the first nine months of fiscal year 2018 due to increased revenue, as well as cost control measures.

The nonprofit 94-hospital system recorded operating income of $280.6 million in the nine months ended March 31, a 39 percent increase from $201.8 million in the same period a year prior, according to recent unaudited bondholder documents. Trinity Health said the increase largely reflected revenue growth, improvements in length of stay, better performance in its managed care health plans and cost containment strategies.

The system's expenses were $13.3 billion for the first nine months of 2018, up 2.8 percent from the same period last year. Trinity Health said it has undertaken several efficiency targets concerning labor, productivity and supply costs.

After incorporating nonoperating gains, Trinity Health ended the third quarter of 2018 with net income of $914.8 million on revenue of $13.6 billion. That's down compared to the $1.2 billion in net income on revenue of $13.1 billion it saw in the first nine months of 2017.
