Texas hospital starts shutting down after ballot measure fails

Ayla Ellison -

The Bowie (Texas) Memorial Hospital board met with employees Nov. 4 to announce the hospital will begin the closing process, according to a Times Record News report.

The hospital board had hoped a new hospital district would be created with the ability to collect taxes to fund the hospital, but voters nixed the measure with 53 percent voting against it.

Hospital administrator Erbie Parisi said he anticipates inpatient services will be transitioned out first and then the hospital will stop accepting emergency room patients, according to the report. The board will meet Monday to put a closing process into place.

Bowie Memorial has 138 employees who will be affected by the hospital closure.
