Texas hospital, operator file for bankruptcy

Alia Paavola -

San Antonio-based Southcross Hospital, which permanently closed in October, two freestanding emergency rooms and their operator filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Nov. 3, according to the San Antonio Express News.

The two freestanding emergency clinics seeking bankruptcy protection are Schertz-Cibolo Emergency Clinic in Schertz, Texas, and Emergency Care of Floresville (Texas). The operator is San Antonio-based Arete Healthcare.

The four companies want their bankruptcy cases jointly administered and designated as "complex" by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, according to the report.

The bankruptcy petition doesn't detail the reasons the four companies are seeking Chapter 11 reorganization, but together they have more than $10 million in debt, the San Antonio Express News reported.

Southcross' largest unsecured creditors are Green Capital Funding, which is owed about $1.1 million; Search Construction, which is owed $171,777; and Southcross Physicians Group, which is owed $137,000.

Southcross Hospital, which opened in 2018, permanently closed Oct. 11, according to its website.

"It is with deep sadness that we have to announce the closure of Southcross Hospital. We would like to thank the Southcross/Pecan Valley community and our greater San Antonio community for their support. We are grateful for having the opportunity to serve our community" the hospital wrote in a Facebook post Oct. 11.

No other details were released about the closure.
