Texas hospital district explains explains how expansion will affect taxpayers

El Paso (Texas) County Hospital District representatives held a public meeting to discuss how it will use $345 million in certificates of obligations to expand University Medical Center of El Paso, which would require citizens to pay more in taxes, KFOX14 reported Aug. 1.

The expansion, if approved by county commissioners, will increase taxes by $56.80 per year for every $100,000 of property valuation from 2023 to 2032. Between 2033 and 2037, the tax amount is planned to reduce to $28.70 per year for every $100,000 of property valuation.

The district is planning five projects, including an expansion of critical care beds, surgery and interventional care, and local urgent care centers. Children's inpatient surgery will also expand, and a comprehensive care center will be added.

County commissioners are expected to vote Sept. 12.
