Texas behavioral health system closes amid accusations of holding patients illegally

Arlington, Texas-based Sundance Behavioral Healthcare System closed its three facilities and surrendered its license after being indicted on charges that it held patients illegally, according to the Star-Telegram.

The corporation, known as SAS Healthcare, runs behavioral health hospitals in North Texas. It was indicted on 20 counts of violating the Texas Mental Health Code. Accusations include that the health system held patients involuntarily and illegally.

The charges involve 11 former patients treated at Sundance Hospital in Arlington.

"Due to the ongoing criminal prosecution, Sundance Behavioral Healthcare System is financially unable to sustain services to the mental health population in our community," the law firm of Varghese Summersett said in a statement obtained by the Star-Telegram. "As a result, the hospital voluntarily brought its patient count to zero."

The health system stopped accepting new patients and discharged current patients at its three facilities in the normal course of treatment, attorney Benson Varghese said.
