State panel approves plan for Illinois hospital to close in January

Springfield, Ill.-based Hospital Sisters Health System plans to discontinue healthcare services at St. Mary's Hospital in Streator, Ill., on Jan. 4, 2016, according to The Times.

HSHS originally announced its plan to close the hospital in September, and a state panel approved the closure on Tuesday. After it shuts down St. Mary's, the health system is set to sell the hospital to Peoria, Ill.-based OSF Healthcare System.

OSF said it will initially use the former hospital building to provide outpatient services. OSF has plans to build a new outpatient center in Streator, and it is uncertain what would happen to the St. Mary's building at that point.

Streator will be without an emergency room once St. Mary's closes. Although there are legislative and regulatory hurdles to face, OSF said it would work to put a standalone ER in the community, according to the report.
