Weymouth's Board of Zoning Appeals approved South Shore Hospital's expansion plan to add two new floors to one of its buildings, according to the Boston Business Journal.
The South Weymouth, Mass.-based hospital's expansion will add 42,287 square feet of new space to the Messina Building and cost $60 million.
The new fourth and fifth floors will house a 24-bed intensive care unit to replace the hospital's existing ICU, which was built in 1978, according to the report. The hospital then plans to renovate what will become vacant space in the old ICU and build 24 new medical surgical beds.
The addition and renovation will be funded through tax-exempt debt, existing cash and philanthropic efforts, according to the report.
Construction is slated to begin this summer.
