Some regional New York hospitals see operating margins tighten from 2015-16: 6 things to know

The Times Union recently looked at financial results for hospitals in Albany, N.Y., and the surrounding areas.

For the report, the publication reviewed New York Department of Health data from 2015 and 2016, the most recent years available.

Here are six things to know.

1. Albany Memorial Hospital and the former St. Mary's Hospital in Troy, N.Y., reported operating losses in 2015 and 2016, according to the report. Albany-based St. Peter's Health Partners operated both facilities during that time period.

2. St. Mary's reported an operating loss of more than $17 million on revenues of $214 million in 2015 and 2016, according to the Times Union. The publication notes SPHP merged St. Mary's with Troy-based Samaritan Hospital, and St. Mary's transitioned into an outpatient center in 2016.

3. Albany Memorial Hospital reported an operating loss of $12 million on revenues of $91 million in 2016.

4. Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, N.Y., also reported an operating loss that year. The facility lost $3.6 million on revenues of $153 million.

5. Seven hospitals among the eight reviewed saw revenue increase in 2016 compared to 2015, according to the report. Four saw earnings increase that year.

6. Three hospitals — Albany Memorial, St. Mary's and Columbia Memorial — reported negative operating margins in 2016, of -13.28 percent, -11.25 percent and -2.34 percent, respectively. St. Peter's Hospital (SPHP), Sunnyview Rehab (SPHP), Samaritan Hospital (SPHP), Saratoga Hospital, Albany Medical Center, SPHP and Ellis Hospital all reported positive operating margins that year, most below 5 percent.

7. Overall, half of local hospitals reported increased operating income between 2015 and 2016, but six reported tightened operating margins during that time period, according to the report.

8. The Times Union reported that is partially because most hospitals also saw bad debt increase.
