Washington hospital lays off administrative staff

Bellevue, Wash.-based Overlake Medical Center and Clinics has laid off administrative staff, the health system confirmed to the Puget Sound Business Journal.

The layoffs, which occurred earlier this year, included 30 workers across Overlake's human resources, information technology and finance departments, a spokesperson said, according to the publication. This represents about 6 percent of the organization's administrative workforce. Overlake's website says it employs more than 3,000 people total.

"Consistent with our values, impacted employees were offered a full support package, including elective severance pay, career transition services/support, and continued benefits coverage," Overlake spokesperson Gestin Suttle said, according to the Puget Sound Business Journal.

Hospitals and health systems across the U.S. are facing financial struggles and other challenges, forcing them to cut jobs. In Washington, healthcare leaders said during a March 21 media briefing that hospitals are facing unsustainable financial losses.

"Ultimately, we'll cease to exist if these losses continue," said Chelene Whiteaker, senior vice president of government affairs at the Washington State Hospital Association, at the media briefing.

Ms. Suttle, with Overlake, said the organization is optimistic as it continues to recruit for many clinical roles and has already made progress on initiatives to improve its financial position.

Overlake includes a 349-bed hospital as well as primary, urgent and specialty care clinics, according to its website.
