Rhode Island hospital scales back services to stem losses

Ayla Ellison -

Memorial Hospital officials have announced plans to shut down several units at its Pawtucket, R.I., location, according to a Rhode Island Public Radio report.

The hospital plans to shut down its birthing center and one of its medical/surgical inpatient units. The intensive care unit at Memorial will also be closed and moved to another location within the hospital's parent system, Providence, R.I.-based Care New England.

Care New England told hospital employees earlier this week that restructuring will result in layoffs, but some staff may be offered jobs elsewhere in the system.

Care New England President Dennis Keefe said the hope is that eliminating some services and relocating others will help stem more financial losses at Memorial.
