Missouri’s 155 hospitals are major employers and strengthen the economy through investments in staff and capital expenditures, according to the report. Healthcare sector contributions to the gross state product have increased from 3.1 percent in 1997 to approximately 9 percent in 2012, with hospital and nursing and residential care accounting for 4.35 percent of the 2012 figure. 1. In 2012, Missouri hospitals employed 152,964 full- and part-time workers, equal to 126,010 full-time equivalent employees. Hospital employment increased by 27,505 jobs from 1990 to 2012.
2. Missouri hospitals made nearly $1.7 billion in capital expenditures in 2012.
3. In 2012, the state’s hospitals provided their employees with nearly $7.5 billion in wages and $1.9 billion in benefits.
