Quorum closes Ohio hospital: 4 things to know

Ayla Ellison -

Affinity Medical Center, a 156-bed hospital in Massillon, Ohio, closed Sunday.

Here are four things to know about the hospital closure.

1. Brentwood, Tenn.-based Quorum Health owns the hospital, and the company announced in early January it planned to close Affinity Medical Center Feb. 4 due to financial troubles.

2. Quorum suspended wind-down efforts at the hospital in late January after Stark County (Ohio) Common Pleas Judge Chryssa Hartnett issued a temporary restraining order sought by physicians and city officials.

3. Quorum and the city of Massillon reached an agreement in early February that called for Quorum to close Affinity Medical Center Feb. 11 and to subsequently transfer ownership of the hospital to the city.

4. Affinity Medical Center closed Sunday, and patients who would have normally been treated there will be transported to other area hospitals, including Mercy Medical Center and Aultman Hospital, both in Canton, Ohio. Both hospitals prepared for the increase in patient volume, according to The Repository.
